NO25.19 Trollkyrkja – The Church of the Trolls
What an experience. Trollkyrkja was one of the absolute highlights of the entire trip, and that’s saying something when you’ve had so many wonderful stops along the way.
The hike to get there was tough – a proper uphill climb over rocks and through forest, with the occasional moment of wondering whether it’s really worth it. Spoiler: it is. A hundred times over.
Trollkyrkja itself is a grotto, a natural cave with underground waterfalls illuminated by openings in the rock. It’s dark, it’s damp, the water rushes down the walls, and the atmosphere is simply magical. You immediately understand why it’s called the Church of the Trolls – it feels as though you’ve entered a hidden realm not really meant for human eyes.
Afterwards we lingered by a mountain lake at the top, sat down and simply chilled out. Legs stretched out, gaze drifting over the mountains, letting everything sink in. There are moments on a trip that stay with you – Trollkyrkja was definitely one of them.
