SK25.1 Sweaty summits & shy bears – our tour through Slovakia

After spending a few relaxing days at the B&B run by Martha and Michał near Krakow, our lovely hosts suggested to visit the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia. "If you like mountains and hiking, you should visit the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia." Mountains? Hiking? A chance to stretch our legs after eating far too many pierogi? Absolutely! So off we went and soon found ourselves parked in a beautiful spot in the heart of the Tatras, surrounded by towering peaks and a small, crystal-clear river.

SK25.2 Castles and UFOs – One evening in Bratislava

Finding a good spot for Wilma near Bratislava turned out to be much harder than expected. After circling around and losing our patience, we finally decided to look for somewhere on the Slovak-Austrian border. That's how we ended up in a tiny village called Deutsch Jahrndorf — the kind of place where foxes and rabbits literally say goodnight to each other. The local highlights? Apparently, a fire somewhere in the area was the talk of the town. And the shop opening hours were… let's say "creative." The local organic store looked so promising, but the sign read: Fridays, 14:00–18:00. Closed next Friday. So much for our shopping spree. Slightly disappointed, we reminded ourselves that we weren't here for village adventures anyway, we were here for Bratislava.

Safety

No concerns, we felt super safe.

Cultural Highlights

Hmm, hard to tell - going by Bratislava apparently, it's ice cream?!

Language & Communication

No issues at all, English seems to be widely spoken.

Local Etiquette

Nothing to mention, but as always take your trash and leave nothing but footprints behind.

🚗 Getting Around

Road Quality & Driving Conditions

Road conditions are very good.

Toll Roads & Vignettes

There are a few toll roads and It seems random at times, but it's ~10€ for a week and you get a reminder before it expires. Easily purchased only.

Border Crossings

Slovakia is part of the Schengen area, meaning no border checks when you enter from another Schengen country.

Police Attitude & Checks

We did not have any experience with the police.

🏕️ Where to Sleep

Free Camping Availability

We had little to no issues finding free sites to stay. We were very surprised to find many fellow campers who offered to stay on their grounds for free or at a (voluntary) donation.

Paid Campsites

You can easily find lots of paid campsites or smaller sites run by private individuals. The cost varies a lot.

Motorhome Infrastructure

It was very easy to find fresh water and dumpsites. Getting rid of trash, however, proved tricky at times.

Groceries & Dining Out

Prices are comparable to the ones found in Germany.

Fuel Prices

Diesel - to our surprise - is slightly less expensive than we are used to from Germany. At the time of traveling it ranged around 1.50€/l. LPG was ~ 0.95€/l

Mobile Internet Quality

4G/5G signal strength is exceptional in most places. We only broke out Starling once and that was for its unlimited bandwidth feature, not due to connectivity issues.

SIM Card Access

You can find them pretty much at every corner.

Laundry

We didn't use any laundry facilities and thus cannot comment.

Best Time to Visit

I'd say pretty much all year round, it's your typical mid-European weather: wet in Winter without any real extremes, somewhat hot yet also wet in Summer.
