As we mentioned in our last post, there was one more highlight waiting for us before heading to Nice: the Cascades du Saut du Loup.
A fairytale-like waterfall hidden away in a narrow gorge.
Entry costs just β¬1 and it is worth every single cent.
Before we tell you more about our visit, here are a few interesting facts:
1. The name means “Wolf’s Leap”
- “Saut du Loup” translates to “Wolf’s Leap.”
- According to local legend, a wolf escaped hunters by leaping across the narrowest part of the gorge, giving the site its name.
2. It’s more than just a single waterfall
- The Cascades du Saut du Loup are made up of several cascades, rapids, and small waterfalls.
- Over thousands of years, the River Loup has carved the limestone gorge, creating natural pools and rock channels.
3. The water shines in turquoise and emerald green
- The combination of crystal-clear mountain water and the limestone bedrock gives the pools their striking turquoise to emerald-green color.
- The vibrant colors are especially beautiful on sunny days.
4. The gorge was formed over millions of years
- The River Loup gradually eroded the limestone over millions of years.
- This process created:
- narrow gorges,
- smooth rock formations,
- giant’s kettles (Marmites de GΓ©ants),
- and the beautiful cascades visible today.
