As we mentioned in our last post, there was one more highlight waiting for us before heading to Nice: the Cascades du Saut du Loup.

A fairytale-like waterfall hidden away in a narrow gorge.

Entry costs just €1 and it is worth every single cent.

Before we tell you more about our visit, here are a few interesting facts:

1. The name means “Wolf’s Leap”

  • “Saut du Loup” translates to “Wolf’s Leap.”
  • According to local legend, a wolf escaped hunters by leaping across the narrowest part of the gorge, giving the site its name.

2. It’s more than just a single waterfall

  • The Cascades du Saut du Loup are made up of several cascades, rapids, and small waterfalls.
  • Over thousands of years, the River Loup has carved the limestone gorge, creating natural pools and rock channels.

3. The water shines in turquoise and emerald green

  • The combination of crystal-clear mountain water and the limestone bedrock gives the pools their striking turquoise to emerald-green color.
  • The vibrant colors are especially beautiful on sunny days.

4. The gorge was formed over millions of years

  • The River Loup gradually eroded the limestone over millions of years.
  • This process created:
  • narrow gorges,
  • smooth rock formations,
  • giant’s kettles (Marmites de GΓ©ants),
  • and the beautiful cascades visible today.
