NO25.10 Saltstraumen – When the Sea Turns

13 October 2025Episode #27By Stefan

Saltstraumen is the world’s strongest tidal current – and that’s no empty claim. Every six hours, around 400 million cubic metres of water forces its way through a strait just 150 metres wide. The result: enormous whirlpools, a ferocious current, and a natural spectacle that simply has to be seen.

We stood on the bridge and watched as the water churned and spun beneath us. Whirlpools formed, drifted, dissolved and reformed – a constant play of forces. You could almost feel the energy of the water physically, even from the safety of the bridge above.

What struck me most was the sheer power with which nature works here. No engine, no machine – just the gravitational pull of the moon setting these vast masses of water in motion. Standing there, you can’t help but feel humbled. Fascinating, awe-inspiring and just a little surreal. I’d never seen anything like it before, and I’m quite sure no video in the world could do the experience justice.
